Top 5 video games taking place in the Middle East

Who said that video games could not have a realistic setting? In the past few years, some video games plots are set in the Middle East or were inspired by the region’s landscapes, for gamers’ greatest pleasures. Come out and play to explore a whole new world.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 – Morocco

On October 12th, 2018, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 was released for PlayStation, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows, and became one of the flagship games of the season. The goal of this first-person shooter game, developed by Treyarch and published by Activision, is to carry out a unique mission facing “rebels in a small Moroccan village who target army aircraft, trying to cross the area near the Sahara Desert”. If the 15th installment of the Call of Duty series and the 4th Black Ops opus seems to be set in Morocco, using many references proper to the country such as local markets and Berber carpets, some of the video game fans claim the setting looks more like an imaginary city, worthy of a cartoon like Aladdin, than a genuine southern village of the country.

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege – Morocco

As of December 2018, the first-person shooter game Rainbow Six Siege developed by Ubisoft will also be set in Morocco. As part of the Operation Wind Bastion, the FPS fans will have a new map to explore, inspired by the architecture of a Moroccan kasbah made in clay bricks, called “Fortress”. Besides the usual team, two new Moroccan operators trained by the Royal Moroccan Gendarmerie – Kaid and Nomad – will be introduced.

Sniper Elite III – Tunisia and Libya

Prequel of Sniper Elite V2, Sniper Elite III is a tactical game which came out in 2014 on Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, among others. If some video games have an oriental touch, the plot itself of Sniper Elite III goes further and takes place in the Tunisian and Libyan desert. The player portrays the sniper Karl Fairburne, who is sent to neutralize German General Franz Vahlen and uncover his top-secret project during the Gazala battle in 1942. From the Siwa Oasis to Kasserine in Tunisia through the Gaberoune oasis in Libya… Sniper Elite III designers turned North Africa into a real playground for shooter games aficionados.

Assassin’s Creed Origins – Egypt

The action-adventure/RPG video game Assassin’s Creed Origins, released in 2017 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Microsoft Windows, pays tribute to the country of pharaohs and mummies, coming back to life for a time. The player follows the vengeful quest of Bayek throughout the Egypt of Ptolemy 13th. On the Nile or inside a pyramid, Assassin’s Creed Origins allows gamers to fight wild factions in the country of Cleopatra, made of huge and unpredictable lands, in order to uncover the origins of the Brotherhood of Assassins. In addition to presenting a new map, the game offers you to learn new fighting techniques and to unlock a dozen weapons with a wide range of features.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare – Iraq

Used to be set in the Middle East, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare does not change and chooses this time the border between Iran and Iraq as a set. Contrary to previous missions which took place in World War II, this one is happening today. In this Call of Duty, each player can choose to follow two fictional conflicts, although set in a realistic setting: in the first one, the player assumes the role of an American marine trapped into an urban guerilla in the Middle East, while the other turns the gamer into a British elite officer involved in secret missions in Russia and Eastern Europe.
