300 kilometres, the eco-citizen project of a Tunisian young man to clean beaches

This 27-year old young Tunisian has given himself the challenge of travelling alone along Tunisian coasts. His goal : cleaning the beaches from Mahdia to Soliman, and to raise awareness of pollution issues among the public.

Modestly equipped with his guitar and backpack, this young Tunisian has set out to defeat waste pollution on Tunisian beaches. The two-month adventure that started last July is quite ambitious. On the program : 30 beaches to clean, the hot summer to accompany him and thousands of attitudes to change!

A citizen’s initiative to serve the good of the planet

Driven by the simple conviction that the citizens’ initiative is the most effective action, this engineer in sanitary engineering fights on the most frequented beaches of Tunisia, like Dar Chaabane in Nabeul.  Mohamed Oussama Houij aims to draw attention of vacationers and authorities on beach pollution. Totally lucid about his realistic ability to clean up the whole coast, his project is more like an awareness campaign. He is now followed by nearly 15,000 people on his Facebook page “300 kilometers” and prevents any political affiliation in order to preserve his project from possible instrumentalisation.

A slow awareness raising in front of the Mediterranean plastic sea

Struck by prevailing disrespect, the lack of environmental awareness and the warning messages of NGOs such as WWF on the pollution of the Mediterranean Sea, especially by plastics, initiatives are gradually emerging in Tunisia. In 2017, Mohamed had already launched a citizen action called “Zabaltouna”, which means “You are invading us with your trash” in Arabic, to raise the problem of pollution in the streets.
