Arab leaders who paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth II after her death
Queen Elizabeth II passed away on September 8, 2022, at the age of 96, after 70 years of reign. During all these years, the British monarch made several visits to the Middle East and established sincere relations with some Arab leaders. The latter were keen to pay him a heartfelt tribute.
King Abdullah II of Jordan
On February 28, 2019, King Abdullah II of Jordan, along with his wife Queen Rania and their eldest son Hussein were invited to Buckingham Palace for a lunch with the sovereign and her daughter, Princess Anne. A friendly relationship that King Abdullah II was keen to honor: “Jordan mourns the death of an iconic leader. […] She was Jordan’s partner and a dear friend of the family. We stand with the people and leaders of the United Kingdom at this difficult time.”
Sultan Haitham bin Tarik of Oman
On December 15, 2021, Queen Elizabeth II received the Omani Sultan Haitham bin Tarik at Windsor. Haitham bin Tarik is a connoisseur of the United Kingdom, having studied at Oxford and worked at the Omani Embassy in London. It was with a telegram of condolences sent to King Charles III, that the sultan greeted the sovereign: “The late queen was a permanent friend of the Sultanate of Oman and contributed to strengthening the close bilateral relations between the two countries.”
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman
During her reign, Queen Elizabeth II met the four successive kings of Saudi Arabia. It is therefore natural, that in March 2018, she receives Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for lunch at Buckingham Palace. Following the announced demise of the monarch, he reacts: “I am saddened by the news of the death of Queen Elizabeth II who dedicated her life to the service of her country. Her Majesty was an example of wisdom, love, and pacifism, and the world today remembers the impact of her reign.”
President of the United Arab Emirates Mohammed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan
Elected President of the United Arab Emirates in May 2022, Mohammed bin Zayed welcomed Queen Elizabeth II and her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, in 2010 at the Abu Dhabi airport during their visit to the Gulf. He had also visited Windsor Castle in 2012, during the Diamond Jubilee of the sovereign. The leader expressed “his sincere condolences to the family of Queen Elizabeth II and the people of the United Kingdom. Her Majesty was a close friend of the UAE and a beloved and respected leader […]”.
