Baghdad in the midst of an artistic revival

For the past few months, Baghdad has been reviving its status as the capital of Arab culture thanks to a real investment in the art world. Beyond preconceptions, Iraq is sharing its talents with the world through a rich and ingenious artistic program.

With the opening of new galleries, ambitious urban renewal projects, and street performances of theater and music, art is once again flourishing in Baghdad.

The restoration of Al-Mutanabbi Street is the symbol of a great renaissance. A true cultural heritage, known for its famous book market, the site has long been a gathering place for Iraqi elites, since its inauguration in 1932 by King Faisal I. It is thanks to private sector investors that in December 2021 Baghdadis were able to enjoy this square again where musicians and artists performed to mark a fresh start.

A renewal but not a novelty

Iraq is rich in a centuries-old artistic history. From the seventh to the thirteenth century, during the golden age of Islam, Baghdad was considered one of the most beautiful capitals in the world. The construction of this authentic circular city brought together the region’s most popular craftsmen and architects to celebrate the greatness of the Abbasid Empire. Baghdad remained the artistic heart of the Middle East in the second half of the twentieth century and was even voted the Capital of Arab Culture in 2013.

“Showing another side of the country.”

In its momentum, Baghdad inaugurated The Gallery, an art space that opened with its first group exhibition of well-known Iraqi artists. Since then, the gallery has presented a new exhibition each month, showcasing local and multidisciplinary art. Baghdad’s artistic initiatives are primarily driven by a desire to showcase the Iraqi people, especially the youth, their aspirations and dreams beyond a headline-grabbing context.

The gallery is demonstrating innovative ways to make its work known abroad. The digitalization of the gallery is a major asset for the growth of visibility. The Gallery promotes many artists and their works on social networks and holds multiple sales. And international buyers are gradually opening their eyes to the gems of Iraq.
