“Champions”, the Saudi film in support of disabilities

The Saudi version of the movie Campeones will be released in theaters in the Gulf on March 10. A comedy that promises humor and emotions to support the cause of people with disabilities in the Kingdom.

Saudi Arabia is offering its own version of the Spanish hit Campeones, the 2018 Goya Award from the Spanish Film Academy, directed by Oscar-winning Argentine producer Andrés Vicente Gomez, director Manuel Calvo and Saudi screenwriters Maram Taibah and Wael Al Saeed.

From drudgery to gratitude

The film narrates the life of Khaled, the arrogant assistant coach of a top soccer team in the country. After losing a match, Khaled is summoned to a disciplinary court. The sentence comes down and Khaled is forced into unexpected community service: banished from his prestigious job, he must now train a team of amateur players with disabilities. A task he despises, before opening his eyes to these players who are often discriminated against because of their disability.

Actors playing their own roles

The film features young disabled people directly recruited from the Jeddah help center, a unique opportunity for them to discover the world of cinema. Alongside them behind the screens are local celebrities like Yassir Al Saggafs, Fatima Al Banawi and Barakah Meets Barakah.

A serious comedy to raise awareness

“Champions” reminds us that winning is not what matters most. The film is a “serious comedy” to raise awareness of disability in the Kingdom. The film carries a strong message of altruism, solidarity and the fight against prejudice. Laughter and emotions guaranteed to raise awareness!
