Morocco signs first Green Partnership with the European Union

Morocco and the European Union (EU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding in the Moroccan capital Rabat on the establishment of a ‘green’ partnership with the EU. Morocco thus becomes the first country to conclude such a partnership with Brussels, reports the Yabiladi news site.

Signed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans living abroad, Nasser Bourita, and the Executive Vice-President of the European Commission and Commissioner for Climate Action Policy, Frans Timmermans, the memorandum aims to establish a ‘green’ partnership between the partners in the areas of combating climate change, energy transition, environmental protection and the promotion of the green and blue economy.

Strategic in nature, with real opportunities for political, economic, technical, and technological cooperation, this green partnership should, among other things, place the fight against climate change, the promotion and progress of energy transition, environmental protection, and the transition to a green and fair economy among the priorities of EU-Moroccan relations.

Strengthened cooperation between Morocco and the EU

The memorandum will enable the partners to progress towards their common goals of becoming low-carbon economies by aiming for climate neutrality, while ensuring the security of their energy supplies and leaving no one behind. It also involves promoting the transition to a low-carbon industry through investments in green technologies, renewable energy production, sustainable mobility and clean production in industry. It will also enable the partners to strengthen their cooperation and make it a lever for mutually beneficial sustainable development.

The agreement also aims at early policy consultation and exchange, taking into account the interests, priorities and concerns of each of the partners during policy development. It also aims to raise public awareness, particularly among the most vulnerable groups, of climate and environmental challenges, encouraging the contribution of the various actors to the success of this partnership.

The partnership was launched in the presence of the Minister of Industry and Trade, Ryad Mezzour, the Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, and the Minister of Economy and Finance, Nadia Fettah Alaoui.
