Punching through stereotypes: Gaza’s only Boxing club for women flourishes

In a region that has seen its fair share of turmoil, a boxing club is now a sanctuary for its women.

15-year-old Farah Abu al-Qomsan is one of the many girls in the Gaza strip who have found solace and empowerment through boxing. As she practices her moves in the center’s full-size boxing ring, she is surrounded by other girls who share her passion for the sport. Their coach, Osama Ayoub, is dedicated to helping these girls reach their full potential. Coach Ayoub founded the club six years ago with only two girls. Now, 40 girls are being trained by the coach in the center.

High hopes and aspirations

The boxing club provides an essential retreat from the stresses of daily life in Gaza. The girls are motivated by big aspirations and seek to participate in world championships. 15-year-old Farah said: “I benefit a lot from boxing and today my ambition is to represent my palestinian people and take part in world championships.”
