Saudi Prince to Take Over French Ligue 2 Football Club Châteauroux

Abdullah bin Mosaad

La Berrichonne football club of Châteauroux will officially become the property of Saudi prince Abdullah bin Mosaad. The businessman has indeed confirmed to AFP the imminent takeover of the French football club with the ambition to "bring back to the highest level" the current 20th and last of the French Ligue 2 (2nd division) championship.

It is through its holding company United World, a group specialising in the “management of sports organisations”, that the investor concluded the purchase agreement with SASP Berrichone, the current owner of the club. “We have been interested in Châteauroux for some time, and the negotiations took time”, confirmed Abdullah bin Mosaad.

The future owner of La Berrichonne is no novice in the sports and football industry. At 56 years of age, the prince, whose personal fortune is estimated at 200 million euros, already owns, through United World, English club Sheffield United (Premier league) which he took over in 2013 in League One (3rd division) and promoted to the Premier League (1st division) in 2019. United World is also a majority shareholder in the football clubs of Beerschot (Belgian first division), Kerala United (Indian first division) and Al Hilal United (UAE second division).

An ambitious project

After four seasons in Ligue 2, La Berrichonne de Châteauroux, now last in the championship with 9 points behind the first non-relegated rider, seems promised to a relegation to National 1 (3rd division). A situation that does not worry the future owner too much. “We have noticed that there was a possibility of relegation, but we have the possibility of rising quickly, and in a few years we will be at the highest level in France,” said the prince, who is also an unconditional fan of Michel Platini.

“When we buy a club, we have several objectives: raising the level of the club, the facilities and the level of the team,” he confirmed. The most important thing is to do it with a long-term perspective”… And retrieve Ligue 1? La Berrichonne can indeed dream of it.
