The Dead Sea, a natural curiosity of Jordan

The name of the Dead Sea may very well sound familiar, as it is one of the most beautiful places to swim. This sublime landscape of Jordan offers an extraordinary experience, due to the particular characteristics of its water. Want to know more? Here’s what you need to know about the Dead Sea, Jordan’s natural curiosity.

The Dead Sea: what is it?

If there is one thing you should do during a stay in Jordan, it is to swim in the Dead Sea! But why exactly? Because this vast expanse of water, which is actually a large salt lake, is known for its high level of salinity. Indeed, the Dead Sea is on average six times saltier than the other seas and oceans of the world. As a result, bathing there is like floating! It will be impossible for you to dive and swim. It is advisable to put yourself on your back and let yourself be carried, to fully enjoy the sensation of floating. An incredible experience. In addition to swimming, you can also smear yourself with mud from the bottom of the sea and rich in benefits.

The Dead Sea is the lowest point on earth and is 492 meters below sea level. A level that is continually falling, as its evaporation began several thousand years ago. A landscape concentrated in mineral salts that allows only a handful of micro-organisms to live there. Hence the name Dead Sea!

Where to go to the Dead Sea in Jordan?

To get to the Dead Sea in Jordan, you have several options. First of all, you can find a free access, like the one at the public beach Herodus Spring. There is a freshwater river nearby for you to rinse off. Otherwise, you can go to private beaches equipped with showers and other amenities for a budget of 25 to 50 JOD for the day. Finally, there is the luxury option, which is to spend one or more nights in one of the many hotels nestled in the northern corner of the Dead Sea: Marriott, Kempinski or the Dead Sea Spa.

How much time to spend at the Dead Sea in Jordan?

If you have chosen a hotel on the Dead Sea, you can spend several days relaxing. But if you don’t have this type of comfort, you should know that the Dead Sea is not a landscape where you linger. Why not? On the one hand, because the salt is aggressive to the skin and it is not uncommon to feel itchy after 10 minutes of swimming, and on the other hand, because the activities are limited because of the floating. We can’t recommend you to also discover the surroundings, as well as the breathtaking archaeological sites of Jordan! Petra, for instance, is a 2/3 hour drive from the Dead Sea.
