The Swimmers, the heroic journey of two Syrian sisters

An unimaginable human adventure, from survival to fulfilling their destiny by two young women survivors of the war in Syria, is The Swimmers, currently showing on Netflix!

The film tells the true story of Yusra and Sara Mardini, two sisters who flee the 2015 war-torn Syria to seek better days in Europe, in Germany to be precise. As competitive swimmers, they have a dream of competing in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

A journey punctuated by misadventures, staged by director Sally El Hosaini, which sees the two young women escape from a bombed-out Damascus, board a plane, and take the same route as tens of thousands of their compatriots. We won’t tell you more so as not to spoil you, but the plane will never arrive at its destination, and the rest of the journey is far from easy…

An epic full of twists and turns, based on a true story

The complicity of the two main actresses, Nathalie and Manal Issa, sisters in real life, contributes to the realism of the film, which offers a raw, unfiltered look at the scale of the journey undertaken by the protagonists. And the bullying and discrimination suffered by the two sisters do not detract from the surge of heightened emotions that overwhelms the viewer upon seeing the two refugees‘ struggles.

But from the quest for normality in a bombed-out Damascus to the search for inner peace after a series of traumatic events, the sisters’ life paths are inspiring and make The Swimmers as touching as it is necessary. Watch it now on your favorite streaming platform!
