Top : The 5 most beautiful lakes of Egypt

A territory with a thousand facets, Egypt is home to a thousand-year-old pharaonic past, seaside resorts, but also other breathtaking natural landscapes. Among the latter, the lakes – of which we don’t talk much – are worth the detour and reveal another facet of the country. Zoom on the most beautiful lakes of Egypt.

Lake Nasser

Lake Nasser is one of the largest artificial lakes in the world. Built between 1958 and 1970, following the Aswan Dam project, it stretches over 500 kilometers in the south of the country. If this project was beneficial to the expansion of water resources in Egypt, it was nevertheless a threat to many temples and other archaeological treasures. Fortunately, a rescue plan was put in place by UNESCO. Today, Lake Nasser is a link between the most spectacular ancient sites: Abu Simbel, the temple of Dakka, the temple of Amada… To be discovered during a cruise!

The lakes of the Siwa oasis

Near the Libyan border, is the oasis of Siwa. An idyllic setting in the middle of the desert, home to a multitude of olive groves, date palms, palm groves and salt lakes. The latter are famous for their hot springs which are said to have therapeutic properties. The most famous? The one nicknamed “Cleopatra’s baths”. The legend tells that the queen would have bathed there in the antiquity, at the time of her arrival in the area.

Lake Burullus

A few kilometers from the port city of Rosetta lies Lake Burullus. Much more than a simple stretch of water, the place is above all one of the largest natural reserves in Egypt and constitutes an obligatory passage for migratory birds. Several species of fish, reptiles, and mammals can also be found there. In this preserved space, access requires a permit.

The magic lake

Located in the wadi El Hitan in Fayoum, the magic lake overlooks the sand dunes and the arid rocks. It is so called because the color of its waters varies with the movements of the sun, becoming sometimes turquoise, sometimes emerald. It is one of the most beautiful spots in the world to admire the sunset!
