Samah Kamil, a young Saudi artist, promotes her country’s culture by drawing mangas. If this sounds like a bit of a culture clash, Kamil has nonetheless managed to meet a very eager public throughout the Kingdom.

Mangas appeared in Saudi Arabia in the 80s, and instantly achieved success. Samah Kamil is part of this young generation of Saudi people who discovered manga in their childhood. Since then, she developed a true passion for mangas. From 2000, mangas, mangas have become a real phenomenon in the Saudi society, and the public is constantly asking for new comics.

Samah Kamil explains the manga successe with the close-to-reality characters and the interesting stories. Like every mangaka, she tries to deliver a social message to her public, and not only entertain it.

Becoming the Saudi reference in manga drawing

Having begun to perfect her style since a young age, Samah Kamilh starts illustrating while she’s still at university. Her parents strongly opposed this career, but changed their minds after she obtained her first paid contract.

Nowadays, Kamil has become famous throughout the country thanks to her unique style. She is also acclaimed by the greatest manga experts and world-known artists. In all her art pieces, she mixes Japanese culture and Saudi tradition. Her book of proverbs, entirely illustrated with mangas, is the most striking example.
