A city with a rich heritage

Also known as “the joyful”, Algiers is a city full of life where cultures intermingle. To stroll through the city is to be carried away by its colonial history, its Berber heritage and the influence of Islam, the central pillar of Algerian culture. The Kasbah immediately sets the tone. This old citadel, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991, has winding alleyways in the heart of the city, but is overflowing with treasures. Ottoman palaces, ancient mosques, craft shops and small cafés dot this unique medina.
The architecture is both Turkish and Arabic, and the labyrinthine staircases and cul-de-sacs are car-free. The design of the Kasbah is remarkably authentic, particularly in terms of the building materials used: wood, stone, mud bricks and lime plaster.

To admire one of the most beautiful buildings in Algiers, head to Place des Martyrs, where the Dar Aziza palace reigns supreme. Supported by majestic marble columns, the building is built around a magnificent patio and two-storey arcades.

… Looking to the future

Faced with a growing population, the city of Algiers is adapting its urban planning and developing new infrastructures. As a result, the Algerian capital is divided in two: an old part and a modern part. Skyscrapers, shopping centres and state-of-the-art residential complexes now stand alongside traditional colonial architecture. This modernity is also reflected in the city’s cultural life. Festivals, concerts and exhibitions are just some of the many events celebrating creativity, contemporary art and Mediterranean identity.
