Arab cuisine prevails in TasteAtlas’ African ranking

31 recipes from Arab countries are among the top 50 selected by TasteAtlas’ “Best of Africa” ranking. Such an accolade is a testament to the sophistication, richness and diversity of Arab cuisines.

In this article, we showcase the top five dishes from Arab countries ranked by TasteAtlas, each of which is sure to quench your cravings.

Rechta, Algeria

The TasteAtlas top dish is rechta, an Algerian specialty of thin, tender flour and semolina noodles served with a flavorful chicken and chickpea stew. Fourth on the TasteAtlas list is knafeh, a luscious dessert representative of Egypt and popular throughout the Arab world. This flavorful treat is made from thin layers of grated phyllo dough, filled with a creamy mixture of cheese and semolina, and dipped in a sweet syrup flavored with rose water. This treat is then garnished with pistachios or other nuts, creating a dessert that is both indulgent and exquisite.

 

Shawarma, Egypt

Shawarma, a beloved street food in Egypt, ranks fifth among the best delicacies in Africa according to TasteAtlas. The dish is prepared by marinating thin slices of meat, such as chicken or lamb, in a mixture of fragrant spices before grilling or roasting them on a spit. The meat is then sliced and wrapped in pita bread or served on a platter with a side of hummus, tahini or other sauces. Shawarma is a popular dish that is often eaten on the go or as a quick meal.

 

Tajine Zitoun, Algeria

The 6th highest-ranked meal on the list is tajine zitoun, another staple of Algerian cuisine. This dish is prepared by braising chicken or lamb with olives, onions, tomatoes and a variety of aromatic spices, such as saffron, ginger and cinnamon. Tajine zitoun is usually served with bread, couscous or rice, and is a hearty and satisfying meal, ideal for any occasion.
