Want to discover Morocco in a different way? Between golden dunes, lush oases, canyons and nomadic tribes, the Moroccan desert offers a guaranteed change of scene! To walk on the hot sand of the Sahara, head for the south of the country. The cities of Marrakech, Agadir and Ouarzazate open the doors to these majestic sandbanks. The most famous are those of Merzouga and Zagora. If you prefer to be guided, opt for an organised excursion!

The roads leading to the desert usually pass through villages, mountains and beautiful lakes. The escape is already starting!

If you are staying in the capital, plan a trip to the Agafay desert in Marrakech. Located only 30 kilometres from Marrakech, you would be wrong to miss out! Nestled on a plateau in the High Atlas, the Agafay desert is renowned for its stones, but also for the variety of its landscape between dunes, oases and lunar expanses. An enchanting place to discover in a day or more, depending on the length of your stay.

The Sahara in Morocco: places not to be missed

Merzouga, Morocco.

Among the must-see desert sites in Morocco are the dunes of Merzouga. This spectacular desert has been used as a backdrop for many films and its sandbanks rise to 160 metres in height. Another Moroccan desert not to be missed is Tarfaya. Known to have inspired the author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry in the creation of his work The Little Prince, the Tarfaya desert is distinguished by a succession of dry lakes. Finally, in the very south of Morocco, discover the Dakhla peninsula. Located on the shores of the Sahara, this region of white sand embraces the ocean. A windy area, which in a few years has become a must-see spot for kitesurfing enthusiasts! The bay also welcomes adventurers who want to sleep under the stars. A magical place.
