Djerba, the sweet pearl of Tunisia

djerba

Between land and sea, the Tunisian island of Djerba offers an idyllic cocoon to travelers who come to recharge their batteries. It is a destination where you can take time to laze on the beach, stroll in the typical markets and immerse yourself in the Tunisian culture. A trip to Djerba planned soon? Here’s what you need to know about this Mediterranean nugget.

Djerba, its beaches and its wild landscapes

If Djerba is so attractive, it is because it has fine sandy beaches with turquoise water. It was nicknamed “the island of golden sands” by Gustave Flaubert. So where to access its beautiful shores? On the north coast, you will find the beautiful public beach of Sidi Mahrez. A wide expanse of sand, which allows most people to enjoy its crystal clear lagoons. Further east, put your towel down on the beach of Seguia. This beach has several spots where you can have a snack between two swims. Just next door, discover also the beach of Aghir, where all the infrastructures are present to make you spend a good time: hotel complexes, sports activities, thalasso centers, local restaurants, etc.

And if you want to go to wilder places, why not organize an excursion to the island of Ras R’mal? Also called “the island of the pink flamingos”, this islet is famous for its wild character and its pretty birds (hence its name!). The crossing can be done from the port of Houmt Souk, aboard a pirate boat.

Djerba and its cultural places

In addition to its paradisiacal beaches, Djerba is also an island that vibrates to the rhythm of its museums. And they are numerous! Among them, three are a must-see. First of all, the Lalla Hadria museum, which exhibits, among other things, ceramics, carpets and jewelry through 15 sublime galleries. In 2nd position of our podium, is the museum of Guellala, famous for its pottery. Vases, jugs and other terracotta objects line the floor, giving the place a typically Mediterranean touch. Finally, your stay in Djerba would not be complete without a visit to the Sidi Zitouni museum, housed in an old 18th century sanctuary. A place with the appearance of Ali Baba’s cave, where the collections are dedicated to popular traditions.

Do you prefer open-air museums? Then head to Djerbahood, in the small traditional village of Erriadh, where the walls are decorated with more than 250 works of street art. Sublime!

Djerba, discovering the local life

How to immerse yourself in the local culture during your vacation in Djerba? Experience the fish market in Houmt Souk! Whether you want to buy fish or simply observe, immerse yourself in this authentic atmosphere. A unique moment! Take advantage of this passage in the most important city of the island to stroll along the small streets, then in the alleys of the souk. Midoun, the second largest city of the island, also offers a similar experience with its market rich in colors and flavors, renowned for its pottery. You will be able to adopt the Tunisian way of life during your stay in Djerba.
