Layaly, the Miracle Dog of Cairo

Young Egyptian filmmaker Soly’s touching documentary “Visa for a Stray Dog” tells the story of Layaly, a Cairo stray dog suffering from a severe infection, who was rescued from the streets and cared for by local animal welfare volunteers, to then be adopted by a family and start a new life in Canada.

Anyone who has walked the streets of Cairo knows that the Egyptian capital is full of stray cats and dogs. Most often left to their own devices, they are sometimes taken in by one of the many volunteers who organize walks, and build shelters to help the most vulnerable animals.

This was the case of Layaly. This young dog had been tied up with a plastic cord before she had finished growing and had ended up developing a terrible infection due to the tightness caused by the cord. An infection so severe that her head was completely deformed.

Adventures worthy of a movie

Without doubt, it is its appearance that attracted the attention of Soly, a young Egyptian filmmaker, and his companions Ahmed Abd El Sattar and Mohammed Elbkry, volunteer animal protection activists. After making inquiries in the neighborhood, they approach the sick dog and take her to a shelter for treatment.

Only a few hours before a life-saving throat operation, Layaly escaped. A 10-day “chase” ensued, organized with the support of local media and a community of Internet users & local volonteers who mobilized for the dog’s fate.

All’s well that ends well

After a successful operation, and a well-deserved time of convalescence and rest, Layaly was able to fly away to a new life, with a radical change of scenery since her new family is located in Canada!

At the end of this 15 minutes documentary entitled “Visa for a stray dog”, we can see the dog, fully recovered, having fun with the other residents welcomed by her foster family.

From the sands of Egypt to the greenery of Canada, this beautiful story of canine rescue will have seen Layaly complete a journey from one continent to another, all thanks to the selfless work of Cairo volunteers. An adventure that warms the heart!
