Lebanon: Franco-Saudi cooperation to improve access to healthcare

France and Saudi Arabia have recently entered into a partnership in Lebanon to improve access to healthcare in the city of Tripoli.

As the second largest city in the country and home to the second largest hospital complex in the country, the city of Tripoli welcomed the French and Saudi ambassadors to Lebanon to discuss the country’s health services.

A sustainable cooperation for Lebanon

Since December 2021, French President Emmanuel Macron and his counterpart Crown Prince Mohammed Ben Salman have embarked on a partnership to support the Lebanese economy in the areas of health, food security and energy. For several months now, joint actions have been taking shape in Lebanon through the establishment of a joint Franco-Saudi fund for Lebanese development. With a total value of $70 million, initial funding of approximately $30 million will support food security and the health sector.

Tripoli Hospital: High Stakes for Public Health

Particularly since the health crisis, Lebanon has been experiencing economic pressure that has stifled the country’s health services. The Tripoli hospital, which used to cover 70% of patients’ medical expenses, is now unable to support this social assistance. In this respect, the funding from France and Saudi Arabia is a real ray of hope in the region. Cooperation with the Red Cross and the country’s network of doctors should allow for the continuity of health services in Tripoli, especially since the city’s hospital has important infrastructures such as its neonatal department
