Spain’s Football Supercup to be held in Saudi Arabia

Several Spanish media, including Marca, claim that the RFEF Federation plans to relocate the Spanish Super Cup to Saudi Arabia as of January 2020. If speculation is on the rise, hosting such a sporting event in the region would be a testament to the Kingdom’s effort to open up to the world.

After the Italian Super Cup and the Dakar Rally, what if Saudi Arabia hosted another major sports event? Several Spanish media, including Marca, say that the Spanish Football Federation plans to relocate the Spanish Super Cup to Saudi Arabia as soon as its next edition, for the next six editions. The operation would bring in around 30 million euros per season for the federation.

Usually held in summer, this annual competition between the winner of the Spanish Cup and the winner of the Spanish Championship would now take place in January.

A renowned event for the kingdom

As part of its Vision 2030 plan, Saudi Arabia aims to become a major entertainment player in the Middle East. The kingdom has recently hosted several sporting events such as the Formula E Grand Prix, the Italian Super Cup in 2019 and will be the host country for the Dakar Rally for the next five years…

Obtaining the Spanish Super Cup will not only allow the Spanish federation to maximize profits and increase audiences, but also enable Saudi Arabia to acquire the status of a major venue for prestigious sporting events.
