This Saudi designer necklace is made from ice cubes!

To raise awareness of climate change issues, Saudi jewelry designer Laila El Mehelmy, with the help of the Parisian design studio Golem, has created a piece of jewelry made from ice, which melts in a matter of minutes.

“OoOoooOoooOh la l’ice”. It is the extravagant – to say the least – name that its creators have given to this most original piece. It consists of a string of silver beads enclosed in seven ice cubes. When worn on the skin, the ice melts after 30 minutes.

The idea is to make customers aware of the issues of global warming and the value of water, a commodity that is becoming increasingly sensitive as droughts recur.

The luxury sector is getting involved

For this project, Saudi designer Laila El Mehelmy, originally from Jeddah but based in Amsterdam, was commissioned to create a necklace of silver pearls on which water could freeze, likening the value of water to that of precious stones. Thus, once the necklace is worn, the heat of the body melts the ice, thus underlining the fragility of the natural ecosystem, but also cooling the wearer.

An interesting stunt, in a time when most water resources are privatized, and droughts are becoming closer and more intense.
