Tunisia now accessible without a passport for French nationals
In a move to boost its tourism industry, Tunisia has announced the reinstatement of the option to travel to the country with only a national identity card accompanied by a travel book for all French travelers.
The announcement was made through a press release sent to travel companies by the Tunisian National Tourist Office (ONTT).
This decision comes at a crucial time for Tunisia, a country that relies heavily on its tourism industry, which constitutes 7% of the country’s total GDP. With the COVID-19 pandemic wreaking havoc on the industry, the country is seeking to revitalize its tourism sector and attract more visitors.

Tunisia: a popular destination for French tourists
France has traditionally been a significant source of tourism for Tunisia, with French tourists being among the most frequent visitors to the country on the southern shores of the Mediterranean sea. According to the Orchestra Barometer published by L’écho touristique, Tunisia ranked as the 4th most booked destination by the French in 2023, after Spain, Metropolitan France, and Greece.
The reinstatement of the national identity card travel option is expected to make it easier for French tourists to visit Tunisia. Previously, French travelers were required to carry a passport to enter the country. The move is part of the government’s efforts to simplify travel procedures and improve the overall tourist experience.
The restoration of this option applies to all airports in the country, including the Tunis-Carthage airport. According to the ONTT, travelers with a national identity card and a voucher will be admitted through all airports in the country. The decision is expected to attract more French tourists to Tunisia, helping to boost the country’s economy and provide much-needed jobs for its citizens.
The passport exemption, however, only applies to organized travel groups of at least five people. The airport of Tunis-Carthage said in a statement: “the entry must be made within the framework of tourist groups composed of at least 5 individuals on scheduled flights and this, provided to present themselves.
