Tunisian Ons Jabeur wins Charleston and climbs to #4 in WTA rankings

Tunisian tennis player Ons Jabeur has started her year by climbing to 4th place in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings.

The 28-year-old showed an unparalleled performance on the court, which allowed her to win the WTA 500 tournament in Charleston against Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic (7-6, 6-4).

“It’s painful to play against you, but for tennis, you’re great,” said Bencic to the Tunisian champion after the match.

Born in Ksar Hellal, Tunisia, Ons Jabeur began her tennis career at a young age, quickly rising through the ranks as a promising junior player. She achieved her first major success by winning the French Open girls’ singles title in 2011, becoming the first Arab player to win a Grand Slam tournament as a junior.

 

Since then, Jabeur has competed in several Grand Slam tournaments, reaching the finals of Wimbledon and the US Open and solidifying her position as a formidable competitor. Her consistent performances have led her to enter the top 5 of the WTA rankings. In 2022, Ons was ranked as the second best player in the WTA rankings, second only to Swiatek.
