Vela x Kween Karaza: the fashion collab that revisits the scarf

An ode to culture, calligraphy and Arabic poetry, the collaboration between Vela Scarves and Kween Karaza reinvents the scarf. The accessory is adorned with shimmering colours and fanciful writings, thus detaching itself from its sacred character to embrace a new femininity. Let’s take a closer look at the collab of the moment, which was launched on 10 October.

It all starts with a message on Instagram sent to designer Eliza Karazah by Vela Scarves. A scarf brand founded in 2009 by two Syrian-born sisters, Marwa Atik and Tasneem Atik Sabri. Vela Scarves is a world-renowned brand offering comfortable pieces made from airy fabrics and sustainable manufacturing processes. An innovative vision that could only be enhanced by the aesthetic of Eliza Karazah, aka Kween Karaza. The artist, of Irish and Levantine origin, is renowned for her terracotta vases, embroidered carpets and ceramics, all decorated with hand-painted Arabic calligraphy. The colour scheme is pop with shades of emerald, candy pink and fuchsia.

A tribute to the Arabic language and poetry

Calligraphy is omnipresent on all the pieces in the collection and pays tribute to Arabic. Marwa Atik, co-founder of Vela, wants to democratise the use of this typical calligraphy, which she finds still too much reserved for the religious context. Her desire through this collaboration? To show that “Arabic is not only for the holy truths, but for swearing and flirting. “And to embody a certain femininity one might add. The proof is in the sportswear set stamped with the word “qawiyah”, which means “a woman who embodies strength”.

The love for Sufi poetry is also celebrated through this bold calligraphy. For example, sand-coloured scarves read: “I knew love the moment I found your love”, by the poet Al Basri.

The Vela x Kween Karaza collection is available on the velascarves.com website. By the way, some models are already sold out!
