We know which film will represent Saudi Arabia at the Oscars

In view of the number of successful film projects in the Kingdom this year, the choice of a project selection committee to represent Saudi Arabia could not have been easy. But after deliberation, it was Haifaa Al Mansour’s talent and experience that were selected, with the selection of the film The Perfect Candidate.

The Saudi Oscar Committee, composed of directors, independent producers, local and regional personalities and chaired by Abdullah Aleyaf, recently decided on the choice of the film that would represent the kingdom at the Oscar 2020 ceremony, in the international feature film category.

It is a work entitled The Perfect Candidate by Haifaa Al Mansour. The film tells the story of a young Saudi woman doctor, who has the ambition to pursue a career in politics, a profession still dominated by men, and who is running for municipal elections while her father travels across the country.

Haifaa Al Mansour is used to making history

Already well known for being the first Saudi woman to make a film, she wouldn’t be a first-time award winner. In fact, she has already won a plethora of awards for her film Wadjda, the first submitted by the kingdom when the ban was lifted.

As a symbol to complete the beautiful story of the project, The Perfect Candidate is the first film to be supported by the Kingdom’s first national film organization, the Saudi Film Council, created at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, with the aim of encouraging and providing a platform for talented Saudi Arabians who wish to pursue a career in the film industry.
