The initiative, funded and implemented by the French jewelry house Cartier, aims to show the important impact that women have had in our societies, and to raise awareness about the inequalities and repercussions they are still facing.
Cartier’s long-standing commitment to women’s rights
For the first time in the history of World Expo, a pavilion specifically dedicated to women was installed among the usual national pavilions, such as that of Morocco, which we told you about last week. Cartier has long been committed to women’s rights, particularly through the Cartier women’s initiative, launched in 2006 to support women entrepreneurs in their projects.
This time, the jewelry house has chosen to invest in the 2020 Dubai Expo, in order to pay tribute to the women who have left their mark on the world, and to find solutions for a more inclusive future that respects their rights.
“The Women’s Pavilion opens a new and important chapter in Maison Cartier’s long-standing commitment to supporting women who are helping to change the world,” said Cyrille Vigneron, the brand’s CEO, in a statement. “We are very pleased and honored to collaborate with Dubai Expo 2020, which offers us a unique opportunity to share our vision of a better future and a more inclusive society with men and women from around the world.”
An informative pavilion on women’s history and rights
The pavilion is set up with exhibit halls that trace the journey of women who have made history, and expose the challenges they still face today, such as access to education, clean water, or the job market.
“We deserve to talk about our own stories ourselves,” said Reem Al Hashimy, minister of cooperation in the United Arab Emirates. “There are many stories of women’s leadership who have transformed society, and this pavilion is a tribute to them,” she added, on the set of CNN.
This pavilion has also been noticed beyond Dubai, as the Executive Director of UN Women, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, congratulated the UAE for initiating this project: “The Women’s Pavilion, in collaboration with Cartier, is setting a needed standard for corporations to rethink their approach to gender advocacy – and is a powerful platform to cascade the gender equality message to the world.“
