Dubai, latest addition to the Michelin Guide

The world-famous Michelin Guide, which specializes in hotels and restaurants, has expanded its list of destinations to include the Middle East region for the first time.

It’s the 37th destination to join the list, and judging by the emirate’s burgeoning offering of restaurants with cutting-edge concepts and cuisines from around the world, we suspected it was only a matter of time.

The list of restaurants in the first Michelin Guide Dubai 2022 was released on June 21. Gwendal Poullennic, international director of the Michelin Guide, revealed the names during a ceremony held at the Dubai Opera House. The inaugural edition included 69 restaurants serving no less than 21 different types of cuisine.

First stars already awarded

In the end, two restaurants received two Michelin stars, nine restaurants received one and 14 restaurants were named “Bib Gourmand”, the award given to restaurants where you can eat three full courses of your choice for about 39 euros, known for their generosity and excellent value for money.

In addition to the enormous leverage of visibility for the region that the entry in the guide represents, it comes with non-negligible economic stakes. For example, Mastercard, a global payments and technology company already committed to the region, including the 2020 World Expo, has joined as an official sponsor of the Michelin Guide Dubai 2022. “In a culturally rich and diverse market where the love of food has become a universal language, the culinary arts are a natural point of passion for UAE consumers,” said Beatrice Cornacchia, senior vice president, marketing and communications, EEMEA, Mastercard.
