Elon Musk’s satellite internet service Starlink comes to Dubai’s waters

The billionaire’s company is expected to equip maritime vehicles with a connection 100 times higher than what is usually done on ships.Starlink, Elon Musk’s satellite Internet start-up, has partnered with Elcome International, a Dubai-based marine electronics company. The partnership aims to launch a new maritime Internet service with unparalleled transfer speeds. It will enable merchant ships, oil rigs and luxury yachts to access the Internet at speeds 100 times faster than conventional satellite services.

Powered by the world’s largest constellation of low-earth orbit satellites, at an altitude of between 200 km and 2,000 km, Starlink’s high-speed, low-latency broadband Internet service for all types of maritime and offshore assets is therefore a revolution in terms of performance and cost.

For the maritime sector, users can benefit from download speeds of up to 350 Mbps at sea, even in “the world’s most remote waters.” The flat antennas weigh less than 7 kg, measure less than 60 square centimeters, contain no moving parts, and can withstand extreme cold, heat, hail, sleet, heavy rain, and high winds of up to 280 km per hour.

“We are excited to be able to bring the benefits of Starlink to our customers,” said Jimmy Grewal, executive director of Elcome. “It’s not just about fast Internet, but the ability for us to deploy real-time autonomy and remote monitoring solutions for these customers in a way that wasn’t possible before. Also consider the benefits to crew members who will now be better able to stay in touch with family and friends while at sea.”
