Futuristic park Aya opens up in Dubai

A futuristic attraction opens its doors this Saturday in Dubai. Aya, a 3,700 square metre immersive sound and light park, promises an “otherworldly experience” at the Wafi City shopping mall.

“A journey into a beautiful universe”. This is the promise of the inventors of this new cultural destination in the city of Dubai. They say they want to bring a “unique, forward-looking entertainment product” to the city.

Why Dubai? Alexander Heller, managing director of Aya’s developer HyperSpace, explains: “Dubai is one of the most interesting cities in the world to build a business like this: you have a very diverse, forward-looking and digitally engaged audience, and it’s one of the most visited cities in the world.

What to expect

The park uses light, sound, and mirrors to create a fascinating and disorientating sensory experience for visitors. It is divided into 12 zones, each designed to elicit a specific reaction. “We use the theme of travel a lot – the idea is that you’re going to a distant universe, interacting with technology in a way you’ve never really done before,” explains Heller.

In the different zones, there are individual shows and a vibrant choreography of lights and sounds that can last up to seven minutes. Staff, smartly dressed in cream-colored robes, guide visitors from one room to the next. The imagery is largely abstract, incorporating ‘alien’ elements in some of the light projections. In one room, jellyfish-like creatures swim or fly in an ethereal dimension. In another, called the “drift zone”, visitors must lie on their backs and watch a light show projected on the ceiling to create the illusion of floating.
