Guggenheim Museum Abu Dhabi to open in 2025!

This week, Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism proudly announced that the completion of the world’s largest museum of modern and contemporary art, the Guggenheim Museum Abu Dhabi was on track to end in 2025! This achievement is part of Abu Dhabi’s plans to transform the UAE into one of the world’s leading centres for cultural and creative industries and to continue its economic diversification.

An architectural landmark in the heart of Abu Dhabi…

Located in the heart of the Saadiyat Island cultural district, the museum will be an architectural and cultural landmark inspired by the surrounding environment and the region by 2025. After the Louvre Abu Dhabi, New York University and Manarat Al Saadiyat, the Guggenheim will join the growing network of cultural institutions in the United Arab Emirates.

This announcement is an important step in the building of the museum and for His Excellency Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture, it reinforces Abu Dhabi’s position as a dynamic centre for arts and culture. The Guggenheim Museum Abu Dhabi, which is the most important museum of modern and contemporary art in the region, will provide an equitable platform for art from around the world. The museum will also play a civic role in its mission to foster a broader interest in global modern and contemporary art, promoting diversity and inclusion in a fruitful cultural exchange”

… that combines local architecture with a futuristic style

Frank Gehry, the architect who conceived and designed the building says “I hope that this building will be embraced by the people of the UAE and that this work will remain a landmark for the country for many years to come“.

The structure is in fact very symbolic as on closer inspection, one discovers several traditional elements such as a modern recreation of the ancient wind towers. Inside, the different spaces are organised very geometrically, so as to highlight the modern works that they will exhibit.

A programme that traces its construction and explores art from around the world

Because the museum is committed to working hand in hand with local artists and supporting contemporary artistic production, the museum has organised and offered an attractive public programme for its visitors from all over the world

Most recently, the museum launched its “Spotlight” video series on Abu Dhabi’s cultural social networking platforms, which explores a selection of Guggenheim Abu Dhabi’s loaned works from around the world and across time.

By presenting a global collection with a particular focus on West Asia, North Africa, and South Asia, the Guggenheim Museum Abu Dhabi will provide its audiences with a deeper understanding of the various art projects that have created the interconnected histories and cultures of the contemporary era.

All we have to do now is wait for 2025!
