Lionel Messi set to join a Saudi club, according to the AFP

According to a recent AFP report, a Saudi source close to the agency said that Lionel Messi is close to joining a Saudi club next season in a juicy deal. The source, described as “close to the matter”, said that the deal was almost finalized and that the Argentine is expected to sign a “remarkable” contract in the Kingdom.

The Saudi club that Messi would join was not revealed, but the source said that the financial package was “huge” and that discussions were close to reaching a few minor details.

A new breakthrough for the cultural outreach of the country

Furthermore, Messi’s arrival in Saudi Arabia would not only be about football, but also about enhancing the Kingdom’s appeal. The country is looking to attract not only big-name players, but also young talent with promise for the future.

“He won’t be there just for football. He will be there to enhance the appeal of the Kingdom,” the Saudi source said.

The report further suggests that Messi’s arrival in Saudi Arabia could attract other top players, with an overall package worth between 500 and 600 million euros being considered. Players close to Messi, such as Busquets, Alba, Ramos, Verratti, Di Maria and Paredes, are likely to join him in Saudi Arabia, according to the same source.

“The negotiations have not been as long as with Ronaldo,” said the source quoted by AFP.

If the deal goes through, it would mark the end of Messi’s run at Paris Saint-Germain, which is due to end on June 30, with the player determined to leave the club this summer.
