Saudi Arabia: Comic-con in virtual version

The Saudi edition of the famous convention dedicated to geek culture will indeed take place, despite the health restrictions in place in the kingdom. But like many events since the arrival of Covid-19, it will be held in a dematerialized version.

Let pop-culture fans in Saudi Arabia and elsewhere not lose hope. Their great gathering will take place. It is simply changing shape to comply with the safety rules in place. The very first eComic Con Live will therefore be held on July 3rd, instead of the physical event that took place in Riyadh and Jeddah in the past years.

While the star panel will not be physically present in the region, as Jason Momoa and Mads Mikkelsen may have been in the past editions, but will be giving an online rendezvous to all fans. The line-up has, however, not yet been announced. On the other hand, a masterclass program is already available on the website.

As every year, a big cosplay contest will take place, judged by some of the biggest names of the genre, such as Michael “Knightmage” Wilson or Cavin Lam. Of course, it will also take place in a totally virtual way. So it’s up to each of the participants to make sure they have the necessary technical means to participate! The place of cosplay in the Saudi Comic Con is without any doubt in the foreground. Arafaat Ali Khan, the co-founder of the event and general manager of Domain Entertainment, the company in charge of the project, explains it as follows: “This community would not exist without the creativity and passion of the fans, with the cosplayers in mind. In the current situation, this contest remains a good way for everyone to keep their spirits up”.

It remains to be seen whether the enthusiasm of the fans will be up to scratch, as the physical gathering remains the main motivation of the public for this kind of event…
