A hailstorm in the desert

A thick layer of hailstones immaculate the orange desert sand in the province of Al Jawf, in northern Saudi Arabia. This usually very hot desert region saw its temperatures drop drastically last week, reaching only 7°C.

 

 

A rare phenomenon, but not unprecedented, since another storm had hit the country in early November, at Mount Dhaka, about 20 km from the capital Riyadh. In November 2020, a similar phenomenon took place in the same region, located near the Jordanian border: violent storms had generated a rain of hailstones on the sandy soil of the desert.
