4 not-to-be-missed Arab female rappers

In a predominantly male musical landscape, these artists use their voices to shed light on social issues, promote women’s rights and redefine the Arab rap landscape.

Felukah

Originally from Egypt, Felukah, whose real name is Sara Elmessiry, is a rising rap star. Based in New York, she mixes Arabic and English in her songs.
In 2018, Felukah entered the music world with her EP “Yansoon”. Her music evokes themes of female empowerment, self-discovery and her cultural heritage. Felukah is not only a rapper, she also showcases her talents as a poet with three published collections. Her presence on the Egyptian hip-hop scene has earned her a place on global platforms such as Spotify’s Rap Egypt playlist.

 

Medusa TN

Medusa is a Tunisian rapper based in Paris. Born in Nabeul in 1991, she fell in love with hip-hop at the age of ten. The artist pursued her passion for break dancing, before starting to rap and record songs at the age of 16. Medusa’s rap transcends anger, tackling a variety of subjects depending on her mood and inspiration. Her music tackles subjects such as women’s equality, politics and social issues. The Tunisian artist collaborates notably with other female rappers, striving to strengthen the Arab female scene in the rap industry. Her electro trap EP, “Trinity”, released in March 2023, is a fusion of Arabic, French and English.

 

Malikah

The Land of Cedars boasts its own rap royalty in Malikah, dubbed as the “Queen of Arab Hip-Hop”. Known as Lynn Fattouh off-stage, Malikah is renowned for her hard-hitting lyricism. Her talent has earned her a prominent place on the Lebanese music scene, and has been recognized by notable publications such as Vogue Arabia and the LA Times. Malikah’s influence extends beyond her home country, as she opened for Snoop Dogg in Abu Dhabi in 2011, cementing her reputation as one of the Middle East’s leading musicians.

 

Meryem Saci

Fleeing Algeria’s civil war, Meryem Saci found solace and artistic expression in Montreal, Canada. Her music blends R&B, jazz, reggae and hip-hop, reflecting the influences that have shaped her music. Meryem’s recent mixtape, “On My Way”, is an introduction to her eclectic style. Her talents have even caught the attention of streaming platform Netflix, which featured her music in the “Iron Fist” series. Through her art, Meryem Saci shares her personal journey and offers a voice to those who have faced adversity.
