Lebanese filmmaker Nadine Labaki joins jury for acclaimed Toronto International Film Festival
Lebanese director Nadine Labaki has been named to the jury of the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), a nomination that comes more than ten years after her film Where Do We Go Now won the Audience Award at the same event.
The director will sit on a panel of renowned experts alongside Oscar-winning director Barry Jenkins and last year’s Platform Award winner Anthony Shim.
The role of the director from the land of cedars on the Platform jury is a major step forward. Labaki will participate in the evaluation of films from 12 countries on three continents. These films, all of which will have their world premiere, will compete for the Platform Prize, which carries a cash prize of $14,900.
“I am delighted to announce that we have an international dream jury with acclaimed filmmakers Barry Jenkins, Nadine Labaki, and Anthony Shim as jury members for the Platform programme at Tiff,” said Anita Lee, chief programming officer at the festival, in an official statement. “Together, they represent the bold and independent spirit of the Platform Prize.”

An accomplished career
In 1997, Nadine Labaki graduated in audiovisual studies from the Université Saint-Joseph in Beirut. Shortly afterwards, she made a name for herself in the Arab film industry with her film 11 Rue Pasteur, which won Best Short Film at the Biennale du Cinéma Arabe in Paris. In 2018, Labaki directed her hit film Capharnaüm, about Syrian refugee camps in Lebanon, which won her the Jury Prize at Cannes in 2018, where she became the first Arab woman to achieve such acclaim.
