Ons Jabeur: the Tunisian tenniswoman enters the world’s Top 7

Ons Jabeur has not stopped impressing. The Tunisian has just won the Madrid Open against the American Jessica Pegula. She thus becomes the first Arab player to win a WTA 1000 title, the most prestigious category of tennis tournaments after the Grand Slams.

An impressive rise to power

Season after season, Jabeur climbs the ladder of the sport. In 2020, she became the first player from an Arab country to reach the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam, in this case the Australian Open, which enabled her to enter the Top 50. Today, the 27-year-old tennis player holds two WTA Tour titles and is ranked 7th in the world.

One day No. 1 in her own right?

On her way to the final, Jabeur put an end to the competition of Simona Halep, former world number one and two-time Grand Slam winner. With the French Open, which runs from 16 May to 5 June, just one week away, the Tunisian is well positioned for the clay court event, which could reshape the international rankings. The player dreams of a first place on the podium, which would represent not only a personal victory but also a consecration for Tunisian tennis. “I hope I can inspire the new generation. Not many players in my country play tennis,” she confessed.
